Frozen out

OliverIndicted Councilman Ken Oliver’s campaign finance troubles continue.

Oliver’s campaign account is now frozen after his campaign treasurer, Robert Gregory, who is also a member of the county planning board, quit. State law requires that each campaign account have a treasurer before it can raise or spend money. (more…)

Raises for county employees?

County Executive Jim Smith will be watching the County Council’s Spending Affordability Committee closely tomorrow as he prepares his budget for the coming year.

Of particular interest will be the committee’s final recommendations on how much the county budget can grow. That number likely will determine whether or not county employees will receive raises.

“It would be wonderful to reward our employees,” said Don Mohler, a spokesman for Smith. (more…)

There’s a group on Facebook for everything.

Have a favorite television show or Weather Channel meteorologist? There’s probably thousands of other people with exactly the same interests.

You can even find some of your local elected officials on the social networking site.

A number of politically active area high school students banded together in 2006 to create a group on Facebook that takes some ill-mannered shots at Democratic Sen. Jim Brochin. The name of the group is too salty for print in family publications or this blog, It attempts to further skewer Brochin with a doctored photo. (more…)

New colors for county Web site

County Executive Jim Smith’s has Ravens fever in a bad way.

Bathing the Old Courthouse in a purple haze two weeks ago was just the start. Now, the county Web site has gone purple as a show of support for the Ravens, who play the Pittsburgh Steelers in next Sunday’s AFC championship game. (more…)

Hikers, bikers encounter deer on the North Central railroad trail in October 2007 • “It’s difficult for the public to trust the police to help them when most (police officers) are hunters, and they let other hunters get away with a lot,” Enid Feinberg, an opponent of the bow hunt in Loch Raven Reservoir, said on Oct. 1. Feinberg said statements made by county and state officials about the orderly nature of the hunt intentionally downplayed reports she was receiving from people who live near the reservoir. (more…)

Gardina • “There’s a lot of people who didn’t get notices and found out through other people, and there’s some who got them and didn’t feel they could comply in the required amount of time,” Councilman Vince Gardina, a Democrat who represents the 5th District, including Towson, Carney and Perry Hall, said July 2. Gardina sponsored a bill that extended the deadline for the county’s Rental Registration program to Jan. 1. (more…)
