BartenfelderCouncilman Joseph Bartenfelder is on the board with what may — or may not — be the first ad of the 2010 election season.

Bartenfelder has announced his intention to run for county executive in 2010, though he has not officially filed. Councilman Kevin Kamenetz is also on the list of likely candidates. Both have been raising the kind of money one needs to mount such a campaign. (more…)

The big raise that wasn’t

Council is breifed on budgetCommunity College of Baltimore County employees almost had $863 million reasons to be happy about County Executive Jim Smith’s budget.

County Auditor Mary Allen was outlining about $12 million in proposed salary increases during the council’s annual overview of the budget on Tuesday.  Most of the raises come as cost of living adjustments for county employees. The lion’s share of that, about $11 million, would go to county teachers. (more…)

Gardina and Adams talk after council meetingCouncilman Vince Gardina’s passion for recycling came to the fore during the council’s April 14 work session when  Ed Adams, director of the county’s public works department, appeared to get the first payment installment for a joint project with Harford County. The project is a plant near Aberdeen Proving Grounds that generates energy by burning trash. (more…)

Not so fast.

In the fine print, the publication lists the area as the “Baltimore/Towson Metro area” with about 2.6 million residents. (more…)

Public hearings can complicate things

HarrisThe Baltimore County Revenue Authority publicly supported a Senate bill that would require a public hearing before the quasi-governmental agency can close, sell or transfer facilities. But, that support doesn’t mean there weren’t concerns.

Don Hutchinson, a current board member and former state senator and county executive, wondered aloud during the board’s March 26 meeting if hearings “cause complications with communicating with the county.” (more…)

Budgets are the guiding star for local governments. The playbook for what an administration has in mind for the coming 12 months.

But getting them done is often as challenging as it is for many of us to get our taxes done by the April 15 deadline. This is especially true this year for Baltimore County, but procrastination is not the issue.

The budget for county, and other jurisdictions in the state, is tied into what happens in Annapolis during the 90-day session that ends April 13. (more…)

Republican State Sen. Andy Harris has been leading the charge against the screening of a triple-X rated movie on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park but he’s not the only county elected official who is concerned.

County Executive Jim Smith issued a brief statement April 2 via Twitter condemning the screening of Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge. (more…)
