Porn is bad

Republican State Sen. Andy Harris has been leading the charge against the screening of a triple-X rated movie on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park but he’s not the only county elected official who is concerned.

County Executive Jim Smith issued a brief statement April 2 via Twitter condemning the screening of Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge.

“It was clearly inappropriate - university does right thing in cancelling,” according to the Twitter post issued by Don Mohler, Smith’s spokeman and minister of Twitter releases.

But why does the county executive care about what goes on at a campus not in his county?

Smith “thought it was pretty outrageous,” Mohler explained.

“If you’re looking for something political, there’s nothing beyond the fact that this was pretty timely and in the news,” Mohler said. “(The statement is) something Jim Smith thinks speaks to the values he believes our society ought to be about.”

Later that same day, Smith issued another statement via email and Twitter urging county residents to take advantage of all available state tax credits and exemptions - something the county executive has not done previously.

Together it might make one wonder if they aren’t related to the county executive’s political future and speculation that he’s interested in state office. (Democratic Comptroller Peter Franchot is the alleged target).
