A kind word never hurts
It’s a rare event for a county agency to escape the budget ax when it comes before the County Council during annual budget hearings. Most departments can expect to see some type of recommendation ranging from a nick to a full-blown cut.
This afternoon’s hearing on the Department of Social Services budget offered one of those rare exceptions.
The department’s proposed budget of $14.1 million budget grows by more than $722,000 in the proposed budget for fiscal year 2010. That’s 5.4 percent more than the current year’s budget.
“We have an extremely adept auditor,” said county Department of Social Services Director Tim Griffith, commenting on the lack of cuts.
That compliment prompted a response from the council.
“They’re done now,” Councilman Sam Moxley told Griffith. “You don’t have to kiss up.”
But Griffith wasn’t taking any chances. He was already thinking of the future.
“There’s always another day,” responded Griffith.
